Designers Today : Anderssen & Voll

Today, we represent the minds behind the Oslo based design studio Anderssen & Voll. The duo has been given international awards and recognition for their work with furniture, lighting, textile and tableware, and have formerly been named Designers of the Year both in Norway and Scandinavia.

Spanning textile design, tableware, lighting, furniture and electronics, Anderssen & Voll’s work embodies the New Nordic style – inspired by Europe’s varied industrial cultures from the mountains of Norway to the plains of Venice, and fuelled by the possibilities of large-scale industrial thinking.

Having graduated (from Bergen Academy of Art and Design and Oslo National Academy of Art) in 2000, Torbjørn Anderssen and Espen Voll co-founded Norway Says, a design group that brought an increased international awareness to Norwegian designers, while helping to bring Norway’s emerging design scene to the forefront of the world stage. Norway Says was awarded the Söderberg Prize in 2007, and its work culminated in 2009’s 10-year retrospective at the National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design in Oslo.

Anderssen & Voll was set up in 2009 and has since collaborated with some of Scandinavia’s most celebrated brands, including Muuto, Kvadrat, Erik Jørgensen, Wrong for Hay, Menu, as well as prominent Italian companies such as Magis, Foscarini and LaPalma.

On Their Design Philosophy

“A good product builds and expands on tradition while simultaneously breaking the rules of said tradition. Modifications and elements of surprise, even changes that are less radical, stimulate thought and reflection, also who may not hold a particular interest in design. This tiny second of reflection is the window of opportunity where we can communicate with the users and that’s what we strive to tap into.”
