Afteroom was founded and directed by the Taiwanese team of Hung-Ming Chen and Chen-Yen Wei, and their mission is simple: to create uncomplicated furniture and objects that become more valuable as time goes on. The duo starts by presenting an attitude of honesty and simplicity and a clear eye towards the world we live in. Taking inspiration from Bauhaus and Scandinavian modernism, and from iconic Nordic designers like Arne Jacobsen, Alvar Aalto, Hans Wegner, Greta Grossman, and Ilmari Tapiovaara, Afteroom designs simple and honest objects that you can grow old with.
Hung-Ming and Chen-Yen’s design studio Afteroom has a philosophy based on simplicity and honesty — and it shows in both their furniture design and the way they spend their time. When the designers aren’t creating items that withstand passing fads or sourcing inspiration from their local library, they prioritize playing with their seven-year-old daughter, visiting parks as a family or having a quick date in the city.
In a multitude of their design objects, a few pieces in collaboration with the Danish design label MENU are highlights of their work.
The minimal Afteroom Series pays homage to functionalism and the Bauhaus school of art, which has become a MENU bestseller since its launch in 2012. This collection is deconstructed and stripped of unnecessary components, with the additional feature of a wider backrest and a luxurious upholstering of both seat and backrest. The result is a blissfully simple chair that embraces minimalism and clean lines without compromising on comfort.
Afteroom Coat Hanger heritages simplicity and rational thinking from modernism. It is easy to be mounted on the wall, and all screws are hidden inside the frame to emphasize the clean aesthetic.
As a fan of Bauhaus, form-follows-function believer, Afteroom designed a stackable table that can be used in different occasions, indoor or outdoor. With its detachable structure, the table is minimized into a small flat package.
Teddy is the mascot of Menu Nepal Projects, it can be a home ornament as well as one’s beloved comfort object. The pure shape and material give more room for imagination and help to bring peaceful cozy moods for home life.
Menu launches a new trade initiative, Nepal Projects. Developed in collaboration with Danida, Nepal Projects provides much-needed fair employment and future opportunities in one of the world’s poorest countries by combining traditional fabric working skills with a current Scandinavian design aesthetic.
Afteroom Bench is yet a supplement to the Afteroom Chair, constituting the same concept – a tribute to Bauhaus and functionalism; reducing the amount of material to a minimum and enhancing the aesthetic appearance to a maximum. Often a side table will be seen next to a bench; so why not logically transform the two into one piece? By changing the backrest into a plate, the result is more than stylish.
The Afteroom studio was immediately appealing to both the trend-watchers and the purists of the design world, and their work has been presented at Furniture fairs worldwide and also in our showroom in Trešnjinog cveta 5!
